INDIC TRANSLATION

Indian regional language translation

The majority of the languages spoken in India are from two language groups: the Indo-Aryan languages, which are spoken by 78% of Indians, and the Dravidian languages, which are spoken by 20% of Indians. Together, these two language families are referred to as Indic languages. India is home to 447 languages, placing it fourth on the list of the most languages a nation has. Hindi, the third most spoken language in the world, Bangla, the sixth most spoken language, and Punjabi, the thirteenth most spoken language, all originated from the Indian subcontinent.

Need for translations in Indian regional languages

English proficiency among Indians is less than 20%. Nearly 50% of the public speaks many languages well and prefers to communicate in ones other than Hindi. There are 22 official regional languages.

This suggests that a sizable portion of the Indian population uses Hindi and English as common languages. But they prefer their original tongue when it comes to personal matters, such as news, social media, literature, and films. The metropolitan centres are overrun with options. Reaching out to the underserved population with digital power in their palms and global aspirations in their minds would enable businesses to grow exponentially.

Multinational corporations and homegrown startups are also looking for Indian regional language translations to capture pan-India customers. Internet giant Google is also planning to launch Google assistant in all Indian Regional languages.

The Indian government plans to invest USD 65 million to broaden access to education, particularly in science and technology, by translating textbooks, curricula, exams, and degree programmes into each of the 22 national languages.

Process of translation in Indian regional languages

Every translator has a different strategy to perform the translation in Indian regional languages, but the following are the essential steps of the translation process:

  1. Text analysis: One of the most crucial steps in the translation process is to read the text thoroughly. This step enables us to determine the original text’s subject matter, the type of translation, the research that will be necessary, and the appropriate resources to handle the translation. At this step, the translators also determine the required time to finish the process and set the deadline.
  2. Research and translation: This is unquestionably the most challenging part of the procedure and calls for moving more quickly. The task that may affect the quality of the translation and how it will be received by the target audience the most is finding terms, whether they be of a legal, technological, mechanical, or other nature, that is exact and accurate when placed in the context of the target language.
  3. Compare original copy with translated copy: The entire translation process—from research and translation through editing and desktop publishing—is covered by this comparison. The main goal of translation is to translate a text from one language into another while maintaining the original text’s meaning. As a result, this constant comparison of the original and the translation is crucial for high-quality development.
  4. Proofreading: Reading one last time through a final translation is essential if we want to rectify any details we might have overlooked. Ideally, this previous read-through should occur a few hours after the conclusion of the translation, but should there be some time constraints, it needs to be handled immediately. It’s important to take this task either way.
  5. Final review: The final review is performed by another translator who was not involved in the translation process of the current document. The reviewer can do the assignment thoroughly while maintaining an open mind and unclouded vision.
  6. Delivery to the client: The final file of the translated text is shared with the client for the client’s review and approval.
